When it comes to cleaning bar foot rails and railings, there are a couple of things you need to consider. Bar rails are fabricated from a variety of metals. As such, different cleaning materials must be used to achieve a radiant finish while maintaining the integrity of the product. Let’s take a look at some of the methods for cleaning different kinds of bar rails and rail plating.
With proper maintenance, your bar rail will stay gleaming and luminous for many years.
Cleaning Polished Brass Rails
Before you install a polished brass bar rail, place an non-abrasive automobile wax on the surface. Ensure that you apply it two to three times a year. Follow the steps below to increase the lifespan of polished brass rails.
- Use a paint stripper to take off old lacquer and wipe it clean.
- Polish the brass with new coating and wipe it clean.
- Use a polymer car wax cleaner on top of the polish.
- Apply a polyurethane sealer on top of the wax and use a soft rag to buff.
- Repeat the process at least 3 times a year.
Cleaning Nickel Rails
Nickel is usually used as a decorative coating on metals. It is used in household grills, faucets, door hinges, or bar rails. When tarnish and grease stains appear on the nickel bar rails, you will need to clean it off. To clean it well, follow the following steps.
- Use a soft cloth to polish the nickel.
- Prepare warm soapy water. Avoid using cold, hot or abrasive soap water because it will cause damage to the plating.
- Use a soft cloth that is already dipped in water to buff the stains.
- Avoid scrubbing the plating with harsh scrubbers.
- Use warm water to rinse off the soap.
- Use a clean, soft cloth to dry the water from the nickel plating.
- Clean the rails at least three times a year.
Cleaning Copper Rails
To properly clean bar rails fabricated from copper, you will need salt, vinegar and flour. Once you have collected these items, follow the steps below to clean the copper rails.
- Make a paste of flour, vinegar and salt in a bowl by mixing the items above.
- Use a brush to coat the copper rail with the paste.
- Let the paste stay on the rail for approximately 30 minutes
- Scrub the copper with a towel to remove the stain.
- You can repeat this process at least twice a year.
Cleaning Oil Rubbed Bronze Rails
Gather a clean towel, a bowl of warm water, a small dish, lemon juice, soft cotton and baking soda. Follow the steps to clean and polish oil rubbed bronze rails.
- Using warm water, rinse the bronze rails with a soft cloth to remove any dust that is on the rail.
- In a small dish, mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda and small amounts of lemon juice until a paste forms.
- Apply the paste on the bronze rail using a small polishing cloth.
- Rub the paste until the desired effect is seen.
- Let the paste rest on the rail for approximately 30 minutes.
- Rinse the rail with warm water and dry it off with a clean towel.
- Repeat the process if necessary to achieve the desired result.
Cleaning Stainless Steel Bar Rails
Stainless steel attracts rust, water stains, and fingerprints. It is vital that the correct cleansers are used to keep your bar rails shinning. The following steps can be used to clean stainless steel bar rails and railings.
- If your bar rails do not have any visible stains, you can apply a solution of water and vinegar, or water and dishwater.
- If stains or discolorations are present, use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar.
- For rust removal, create a mixture of one cup of water and one tablespoon of baking soda. Use the solution to fully coat the railings.
- Gently scrub off stains lightly, making sure to avoid any hard brushes or chemicals, as they might damage the surface.
- Finally, use a lint-free cloth or a paper towel to clean off the stain. Use this method to clean the rails three to four times a year.
