The pizza industry is worth over $45 billion annually, and New York state is known for having some of the best pizza joints in the world. La Scala in Commack is well-known for its homemade thin crust pizzas. For over 40 years, La Scala has been dedicated to serving up the finest pies in town. Nunzio Cusumano, the founder of the popular restaurant, and his daughter continue to work in the pizzeria today. Some of the employees have remained for over 20 years maintaining the integrity of their famous pizza and Italian dishes. Choices are plentiful, but what sets La Scala apart is their famous homemade cheese pizza. They are also known to serve up enormous complimentary Garlic Knots.
Pizzetteria Brunetti in Hampton Beach is so well-recognized that it ranked number 87 on the Daily Meal’s 101 Best Pizzas in America for 2016. This father and son Pizza shop has a hand-build, wood burning ovenTheir signature pizza, Vongole, is topped with local, high-quality Long Island clams, garlic and butter sauce and parsley. Pizzetteria Brunetti has a number of other unique pie creations including lobster roll pizza and a breakfast-combo pie with bacon, egg and hash browns.
Little Vincent’s Pizza in Huntington became famous for their unique and interesting idea to serve pizza topped with cold cheese. The idea was spawned because of a trend popular among college-aged students. The thin-crust pizza is cooked with mozzarella cheese, but when paired with cold cheese on-top, a perfect pizza is made. This insanely popular pizza place is modestly built and only has a capacity of 20 occupants. Despite such modesty, Little Vincent’s was listed as one of the top 35 pizza places in the nation by Fox News in 2012. While they don’t have an official website, there is a Facebook page dedicated to the delicious pizza joint.
Sal’s Pizza in Sayville is owned by the Giambanco family who came to New York from Sicily in 1980. Their authentic Italian recipes were quickly incorporated into the menu when the family took over Sal’s Pizzeria & Catering in 1990. Today, the pizzeria is recognized as one of New York’s best pizza places. While their Sicilian slices make them so popular, they also serve specialty pizzas like Chicken Caesar, Penne Alla Vodka, Chicken Honey Dijon and Eggplant Rollatini.
Gino’s of Long Beach was established in 1962 by Gino Branchinelli, and his grandchildren maintain the restaurant today. They are famous for their thin-crust Grandma’s Pizza which comes with garlic plum tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil. They are also known for their thin-crust Vodka Pizza with mozzarella, pink cream sauce and vodka. Gino’s of Long Beach was ranked number 82 on the Daily Meal’s 101 Best Pizzas in America for 2016.
Branchinelli’s Pizza in Hauppauge uses the finest ingredients including San Marzano tomatoes, fresh and natural mozzarella cheese and crispy textured dough. The restaurant hand-bakes its dough three times a day at timed intervals for the perfect crisp. They are most known for their Sicilian Pizza, but their menu includes items like eggplant pizza, salad pizza and broccoli pizza.
Miceli Brothers Pizzeria Restaurant in West Babylon gives customers a real fine-dining Italian atmosphere, and they have some of Suffolk County’s best pizza pies. They are famous for their amazing menu of traditional and gourmet pies including the Vodka Sauce pie, Grandma’s pizza, Neapolitan, Sicilian, Hawaiian, Chicken Marsala and Calamari. Most of their slices have a sesame seed crust, and everything is prepared fresh. This restaurant serves a multitude of other Italian dishes.
While big chains like Papa Johns and Pizza Hut own a large percentage of the pizza market, New Yorkers know that these types of pizza places don’t stand a chance against a pie from an authentic Suffolk County pizzeria.
