How to Choose the Right Bar Stool Height

Choosing the right bar stools is a key part of creating a comfortable, inviting atmosphere. While bar stools are relatively easy to replace, it’s much better to measure twice and buy once. Fortunately, picking the right ones the first time doesn’t have to be a lengthy, complicated process as long as you keep a few key measurements in mind.

While bar stools are relatively easy to replace, it’s much better to measure twice and buy once.

Standard Bar Stool Heights

Stools generally come in four heights: short, counter, bar, and tall. Short and counter stools are typically for use in home dining areas or breakfast nooks, and come in under 29”. For professional establishments, bar and tall (sometimes called “extra-tall”) height stools are usually the go-to. Bar height stools measure between 30-36”, while tall stools are between 34-40”. Most bars and dining establishments have counter tops set at about 42” in height, so 30” stools are very common.

Measuring for Bar Stools

With these numbers in mind, measuring is relatively simple. Measure the height of the counter or table surface, and subtract about 10” to allow for leg room. This will yield a good approximation of what height is needed for comfortable seating. For hydraulic stools, make sure that the measurement falls somewhere in the middle of the range of their adjustable heights.

For stools with backs, the height of the back is also important. Full back bar stools are generally the most comfortable, while backless stools offer the most visibility. Low back stools are a good compromise, providing customers some back support while still offering a sleek, uncluttered look with minimal visual obstruction.

Choosing the Right Number of Bar Stools

Choosing the right number of bar stools is trickier. It can be tempting to try to fit in as many stools as possible to provide the maximum amount of seating, but this doesn’t make for a very comfortable experience for customers. Ideally, stools should have roughly 26-30” of distance between stools, measure from the center of one stool to the center of the next, or about 6-8” edge-to-edge. Allow 14” from the center of the last stool to the wall or edge of the bar/counter for patron comfort and ease of movement. This will allow for a comfortable amount of arm space, as well as make serving and cleanup easier.

Stool width, as well as spacing, also has a lot of impact on how many bar stools can fit in a space. 15” wide stools are the most efficient, but not the most comfortable option for many people. 17” wide stools offer a good compromise between comfort and space. 21” stools take up the most counter space, but their generous proportions also may be the most comfortable seating for customers.

Choosing the right bar stools is a tricky balance between comfort, aesthetics, and efficiency. By finding the right height and choosing a good back height, stool width, and spacing, you can have seating that looks as good as it feels.
